  • Applications are now being accepted for an internship at Bridge Michigan
  • The internship is paid, and offers eight weeks of experience for an aspiring journalist
  • The internship will allow a college journalist to work with professional reporters on various beats

Bridge Michigan, a nonprofit, nonpartisan online news source with more than 600,00 monthly readers, is offering one paid, eight-week student internship for summer 2023.

Bridge is a four-time Michigan Newspaper of the Year and works closely with our nonprofit parent, The Center for Michigan; our independent sister publication, BridgeDetroit; and nonprofits statewide and nationally. We are a growth-minded organization that treasures collaboration, engagement and flexibility and innovative ways of telling good stories, led by a Pulitzer Prize-winning editor and a staff that has won hundreds of state and national awards.

Past interns have gone on to Fulbright scholarships and Yale Law School, internships with NBC Nightly News, the Texas Tribune and Dow Jones, and full-time jobs with the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, WKAR, the Ann Arbor News and the Petoskey News-Review.

Bridge seeks candidates who are considering a career in journalism and have some journalism training in college coursework and/or publications.

Reporting internships likely will include breaking news reporting, enterprise reporting (both assigned and self-generated ideas), and assisting Bridge’s full-time staff.

Scope of the work likely will run from in-person and telephone interviews, to reporting and writing stories independently and in collaboration with Bridge journalists. Interns should expect to report in a variety of beats, including state government, education, environment, business and health.

Interns will work closely with supervisors on a daily basis and receive frequent feedback in a fast-paced, news-focused environment, making it a great place for aspiring journalists to gain experience. Interns must be based in (and are preferably residents of) Michigan. Ideally, work will be split between remote work, and in-person work in Bridge’s offices in Lansing and Ypsilanti. Bridge will also consider applicants who lack the ability to commute.

Interns will receive $5,000 over a full-time, eight-week schedule, with the start and end dates negotiable. The internship pays mileage to and from assignments, but does not include a housing stipend.
