Bridge Magazine seeks a Michigan environment reporter

Lake Huron

Bridge Magazine seeks an ambitious, adventurous reporter to cover Michigan’s environment for our nonpartisan publication. You will have our lower and upper peninsulas as a canvas in one of America’s great newsmaking states.

Michigan boasts the nation’s longest freshwater shoreline, some of its best trout fishing, millions of acres in parks and the most beautiful place in America. But it also faces PFAS chemicals in its groundwater, an aging oil and gas pipeline in the Great Lakes and a cauldron of industrial pollutants in southwest Detroit.

Both are accurate portraits of the Michigan landscape — the celebrated streams and forests of Hemingway’s youth, and the government’s betrayal of Flint when lead entered that city’s water supply.

Your charge is to uncover and explain to Bridge’s smart, statewide audience the conservation issues and challenges facing Michigan. We want a journalist who knows how to cover a beat, break news and continue our tradition of writing vivid, accessible, jargon-free environmental stories framed to the interests of ordinary residents.

Environmental reporting experience is a plus, but not required.

What is required is fairness and a watchdog, investigative mentality that holds government, corporate interests and environmental groups accountable. That means no sacred cows and a willingness to follow facts and data where they lead, even if your findings buck conventional wisdom, especially so. You are productive and curious, with a demonstrated ability to generate stories and build sources. And you must be a good and generous colleague.

Bridge Magazine is the four-time Michigan Press Association newspaper of the year and one of the fastest growing nonprofits in the nation. We offer solid pay and generous vacation and health care benefits. Bridge is an equal opportunity employer.

If you have an interest in this position, please send your resume and cover letter to Bridge Editor David Zeman dzeman@bridgemi.com and Managing Editor Joel Kurth jkurth@bridgemi.com by Nov. 22, 2019.
