  • Michigan gas prices are the lowest they’ve been all year
  • The average price for a gallon of regular gas is $2.96, 15 cents less than last week
  • About 3.3 million Michiganders are expected to hit the road for the holidays

Christmas has some early for Michiganders getting ready for road trips, with regular gas prices falling to an average of $2.96 per gallon statewide, about $44 for a 15-gallon tank.

A gallon of gas is down 35 cents than it was a month ago, and it is 12 cents less than it was a year ago, according to AAA Michigan.  Nationally, the average price per gallon is $3.08 cents.

AAA predicts that 3.3 million Michigan residents will drive for the holidays, which is the most on record after 2019. Last year’s gas prices were roughly the same as now, about $2.99 per gallon.

“Michigan motorists are seeing the lowest gas prices so far this year," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA Michigan.

"If oil prices remain low, drivers can expect pump prices to do the same during the holiday season."

Demand for gas nationally has increased from 8.47 million to 8.86 million barrels per day last week, and supply for domestic gasoline increased to 224 million barrels, according to data from the Energy Information Administration.

According to  AAA, here are the average costs of a gallon of gas across Michigan:

  • Benton Harbor: $2.84
  • Traverse City: $2.84
  • Flint: $2.86 per gallon
  • Grand Rapids/Muskegon/Holland: $2.86
  • Saginaw/Bay City/Midland: $2.94
  • Metro Detroit: $2.95
  • Lansing/East Lansing: $2.96
  • Ann Arbor: $3.01
  • Jackson: $3.09
  • Marquette $3.14
