Michigan State’s Breslin scoreboard to go on sale in the coming weeks

Spartan fans will be able to acquire a unique souvenir from the Michigan State University Surplus Store soon: a piece of the Breslin Center scoreboard.
The MSU Surplus Store, a building normally brimming with old office desks and orphaned bicycles, reposted a picture of the lowered scoreboard on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, with the caption, “Yes, it is coming to the store…but just not in one piece. We will be sure to provide updates when available.”

No word on prices yet, or the size of the pieces.
The post got an immediate reaction from Spartan fans on Twitter, with over 300 likes and 40 retweets in the first two hours. Many fans expressed interest in the pieces, with one user saying they were “making room” in their living room in anticipation.
The scoreboard was originally installed in 2011, costing around $2 million.

Chris Hewitt, operations coordinator for the surplus center and recycling center, says that pieces should be available for sale in the next few weeks.
“We have the trailers already in Breslin to go on once they bring (the scoreboard) down, to bring it over here,” Hewitt told Bridge Michigan Wednesday. “Our hope right now is that in a couple weeks we’ll have things ready.”
According to Hewitt, the Surplus Store isn’t sure what the pieces will look like yet, or just what parts of the scoreboard will be available. Hewitt said they will know more when the scoreboard arrives at their facilities. The electronics of the scoreboard will most likely be salvaged and donated to MSU Recycling so that the pieces can avoid the landfill.
Hewitt said pieces will be sold in-store, but that the availability online isn’t as concrete.
“We try to get as much online as possible, but we get such a large influx everyday that not everything gets up online,” Hewitt said. “A lot of time things sell before they go up online.”
Hewitt suggests that fans interested should pay attention to the surplus store’s social media accounts.
