Bridge Michigan, the state’s preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan online news source, is offering several paid, eight-week student internships for summer 2022.

A four-time Michigan Newspaper of the Year, with more than 600,000 monthly readers, Bridge is seeking candidates who are considering a career in journalism and have some journalism training in college coursework and/or publications, as well as candidates interested in and have some background in audience development and social media promotion.

Previous interns have been students at Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Yale University and Columbia University.

Reporting internships likely will include breaking news reporting, enterprise reporting (both assigned and self-generated ideas), and assisting Bridge’s full-time staff. Scope of the work likely will run from data entry, to in-person and telephone interviews, to reporting and writing stories independently and in collaboration with Bridge journalists.

Interns should expect to report in a variety of beats, including state government, education, environment, business and health. The audience development internship likely will include digital marketing, digital campaign budgeting, analysis of Google Analytics and loyalty metrics, social media promotion and SEO initiatives, in a field that is in high demand across the country.

Interns will work closely with supervisors on a daily basis and receive frequent feedback in a fast-paced, news-focused environment, making it a great place for aspiring journalists to gain experience. Interns must be based in (and preferably residents of) Michigan. Ideally, work will be conducted both remotely and, assuming health conditions allow, in Bridge’s offices in Lansing and Ypsilanti several days a week. Bridge will also consider applicants who lack the ability to commute.

Interns will receive $4,800 over a full-time, eight-week schedule, with the start and end dates negotiable. The internship pays mileage to and from assignments, but does not include a housing stipend.

Bridge is committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people, applicants from rural and low- or moderate-income households and people with disabilities.

Candidates should submit a cover letter and clips (if applicable) to Ron French at rfrench@bridgemi.com and Paula Gardner at pgardner@bridgemi.com, with “Bridge internship” in the subject line. Cover letters should indicate whether the applicant is applying for an internship in reporting, audience development or both.
